Maddie Voigt: Passion For Fashion

Hey Spotlight Fans

It’s finally Spring, and I’m so excited! Spring and Summer are definitely my favorite seasons because the weather warms up and there is plenty of time to dance and be active. This month I was asked to write about dance fashion. Something that is really important to me when I’m dancing is that I feel comfortable in what I am wearing. Feeling comfortable in every situation is sometimes hard. In order for us to grow as dancers, we have to push ourselves out of our comfort zone, being in clothing that I love always helps me go the extra distance.

Most of the time I tend to dance in leggings, a sports bra, and a comfy loose shirt. Some of my favorite clothing brands are Nike, Athleta, and Under Armour. I absolutely love Athleta leggings; they aren’t too thick and not too thin. They are very breathable and are good at keeping me cool during an intense workout. I also feel great wearing Athleta and Nike sports bras. They are very stylish and can definitely stand out in a crowd during summer workshop or master classes.

When adding a shirt to my outfit, I often select tops from Under Armour, they’re my favorite. Under Armour fabric is made from a breathable material and if you tend to get super sweaty, your shirt won’t be drenched. Under Armour has shirts that are great for covering up but are also fitted enough to have your instructors see the necessary alignment corrections.

Looking at your talent and technique, nothing else.

During my technique classes, I feel most comfortable dancing in lightweight oversized shirts (usually shirts I sneak from my brothers closest). Do this only If your studio’s dress code allows it. Some of my favorite brands for those shirts are RVCA, Vans, and Quicksilver. Last, but not least, my ballet attire is very specific. My studio requires dancers at my level to wear pink tights and navy blue leotards. My absolute favorite leotard is from Tilt Dancewear. Tilt is a small dancewear company located in Washington State. They make very comfortable leotards that hold up well when washed and last a very long time.

I think it is important when you’re shopping for dance clothes to remember to stay modest. This doesn’t mean you can’t wear leggings or a sports bra, because that’s what I LOVE to dance in. It just means to remember the kind of reputation you want, and that you want people to be looking at your talent and technique, nothing else. Also, when you are walking out of your studio at the end of the day, don’t forget to put on a cover-up. I tend to reach towards loose comfy shirts or a thinner sweatshirt because I’m usually hot and sweaty. I love throwing on my Spotlight lightweight zip-up hoodie that I picked up from the Spotlight boutique at the Coeur d’Alene, Idaho competition.

Overall in the dance world, appearance can be pretty important, but remember to stay true to who you are and don’t let the “up to date” fashion change that. Wear what you are comfortable with and always be the best version of you.
