Didi Vega: Finding a Balance between Dance and School

Being a competitive dancer requires a lot of training and time and being a student is a handful of work too. Balancing both is not easy. I am sure all of you can relate to this, there is homework, tests, exams, projects, presentations, competitions, friends, and a lot more to juggle between both.

I want to share some ideas that will help you find enough time for anything…maybe.

Organize

The more you get organized, the less hassled you are at the last minute. Being organized is a skill that will help you in dance, school, and your whole life.

Plan

Get a planner this is the best way of organizing your schedule. Use a calendar mark important stuff like, quizzes, assignments, tests, competitions, recital and performances. I have my amazing mom who is such a big help with this. She also tells me to take advantage of any free time I get and to work on assignments ahead of time that way I don’t have to compromise with my dance practices later.

Prioritize

As a dancer, you have to do it all. So if id dance classes four nights a week (like me this season), you’ll need to prioritize well. You probably want to participate in social activities with friends too, but remember that you have to cut out on something and is only you who can decide this. Do not end up saying "yes" to everything; you don't want to end up being frustrated. You are committed to dance only because you want to do it. People, who love you and care for your passion for dance, will understand.

A few other extra things that can help you:

Eat well

A healthy body is a pre-requisite for any dancer. Add to it the hectic pace of life as a dancer and a student; you will surely be thankful if you don't fall sick or get injuries as often as your best friend. Again, balance is the key.

Take a break ofF social media regularly

Keeping aside distractions like checking messages on Snap-chat when you are studying for school. I myself get so distracted with YouTube a lot. You will open up lots of free time you never knew existed! Try it and see for yourself!

Remember while in class, leave your dance worries outside the door. And when dancing, leave your academic stress at home. Focus on what you are doing, now. Don't stress out over a missed test while you are performing or practicing your routine. Dance is the best way to relieve some of your academic stress and use it as motivation to do better next time. Both education and dancing are important. You don't have to overload yourself with one over the other, create an honest vision of your future and work on it.

Lastly, know that it can be done! It may seem overwhelming at times, but remember that other people have gone through the same thing you are and they have succeeded. You can too.

Love,

Didi
